SUMMIT COUNTY – With the exception of the Vail Pass Recpath, all sections of the Summit County Recreational Pathway System (Recpath) are now open for the 2020 season. On Thursday morning, the Summit County Road & Bridge swept and opened the Tenmile Canyon section, which typically remains closed later than other sections each spring due to heightened avalanche risk and significantly greater annual cleanup efforts.

“Fortunately, we were not confronted with the same cleanup effort required in 2019 when numerous large avalanches crossed the Tenmile Canyon Recpath,” Summit County Open Space & Trails Resource Specialist Jason Lederer said. “However, two large avalanches crossed the Recpath this year and we commend the Road & Bridge Department for their diligent efforts to clear the debris in an expeditious manner.”

The Tenmile Canyon Recpath typically opens significantly later than other stretches of the pathway system, because it runs underneath 25 avalanche paths in the Tenmile Range. For the last several seasons, the Summit County Open Space & Trails Department has contracted with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center to assess spring avalanche risk.

“We received the go ahead from CAIC to commence clearing work in Tenmile Canyon earlier this week,” Summit County Open Space & Trails Director Brian Lorch said. “Our County Road & Bridge crews were anticipating the all-clear from CAIC and worked long days to get the Recpath open for the weekend.”

“With the Tenmile Canyon Recpath now open, focus will shift to the Vail Pass Recpath,” Lorch said. Snow is still deep in many areas and there are some maintenance issues we would like to address before opening. As with every spring, we appreciate everyone’s patience as work on the openings.”

The vault toilet at Officers Gulch is currently closed. Although the Tenmile Canyon Recpath is open, there may still be wet and icy spots, and users may encounter workers and maintenance vehicles, especially near Copper Mountain Resort where construction on the Fremont Pass Recreational Pathway is scheduled to start this month. Recpath users are urged to exercise caution and slow down when approaching work areas or vehicles.
