SHERIFF USES EXISTING AUTHORITY TO MANAGE TRAILHEAD USAGE
SUMMIT COUNTY, CO – Summit County Sheriff, Jaime FitzSimons extends his appreciation to the public for respecting the Public Health Order for social distancing in respect to trailhead usage to access the National Forest. The Sheriff, through monitoring trailheads has seen reduced trailhead volume in the last few weeks. Of the more than 40 trailheads in Summit County, most offer limited parking which automatically limits trail usage.
Sheriff FitzSimons announced strict parking enforcement would be taken for any overflow cars parked at trailheads. At this time, the Sheriff directed this strict enforcement of existing parking regulations instead of the seasonal enforcement based on weather and community complaints. Monitoring of these trailheads has resulted in no tickets issued.
Sheriff FitzSimons stated, “All of our contacts with the recreating public were positive and proper social distancing and face coverings were observed by deputies. Our increased patrols and presence provided an opportunity for deputies to further educate people on the Public Health Order. I continue to be a strong advocate for mental health and it’s connection to physical activity.”
Sheriff FitzSimons extends his thank you to the public for voluntary compliance of the Public Health Order while balancing the public’s right to be outdoors.
