Summary:
Yesterday, firefighters were able to hold and improve line within the fuel breaks and mop-up on the south and east sides of the fire. Crews constructed line through the timber along the northwestern side of the fire while using a helicopter to weaken hot spots within the fire’s perimeter.
Today, firefighters will continue to build upon the work completed yesterday by patrolling and performing mop-up near structures. Work will continue within the timber on the northern side of the fire to hold and improve fire lines. Crews will also begin scouting for contingency lines on the northwestern side of the fire. A plan is in place for resources from the Buffalo Fire to assist with any new fire starts.
The use of aerial resources, such as helicopters, in suppression efforts to protect structures and ensure the safety of ground personnel has been essential to the management of this fire due to the amount of beetle-killed timber within the fire perimeter. Aerial resources will continue to be used as necessary.
The forecasted weather for today is for slightly warmer temperatures with a high of 73. Winds are predicted to be out of the west at 11-13 mph, gusting to 30mph. There is also a chance of a late thunderstorm and dry lightning.
The Rocky Mountain Incident Management Blue Team assumed command of the Buffalo Fire from the local type 3 organization at 6:00am this morning.
“The team and resources who have been managing the Buffalo Fire have done an excellent job at ensuring public and firefighter safety. We thank them for their hard work during the first days of the fire,” said Jay Esperance, Incident Commander of the Rocky Mountain Incident Management Blue Team.
Evacuations, road, and trail closures remain in place. The Summit County Sheriff and the Incident Commander will look for every opportunity to lift evacuations.
