[ARCHIVED] Fire terms explained

The original item was published from June 13, 2018 12:42 PM to February 8, 2019 1:05 PM

There have been a lot of questions about whether or not the #BuffaloFire is "contained." As of 12:20 p.m., there is 0 percent containment and the fire remains at 91 acres. Here's an explanation of the terms we use when talking about wildfires:

Contained: This means that there is a complete and established fuel break around the fire. This may include natural and man-made barriers (ex: firefighters digging a line). Even if a fire is 100% contained, it can still be burning within the containment line.

Controlled: This means that the fire has little to no risk of expanding beyond the containment line. A controlled fire can still be burning within the containment line.

Extinguished: This means the fire is OUT.

- Our public hotline is open until 10:00 p.m. tonight. Call us with your questions at 970.668.9730. A public meeting will be held tonight at 6:15 p.m. at the Silverthorne Pavilion (400 Blue River Pkwy).
