Contractor Registrations

Summit County requires that all contractors register with the Summit County Building Department in order to obtain permits.
To register, you must provide proof of general liability insurance (listing the Summit County Building Department as the certificate holder), with minimum coverage of $300,000.

General, mechanical and alternative-energy contractor registrations expire at the end of each calendar year.

Electrical and plumbing contractor registrations expire on the expiration date listed on the state licenses.

General Contractor

General contractors are not required to be licensed through the state. They are, however, required to be registered with the Summit County Building Department.

Electrical Contractor

Electrical contractors are required to be licensed through the state (Masters and Contractors Licenses) as well as registered with Summit County. There is no Summit County registration fee associated with the electrical trade. 
 
Summit County inspectors shall, based on that inspector's familiarity with the installer, require each individual doing electrical work as defined by 12-23-101 definitions C.R.S. to produce documentation showing they are a currently licensed Colorado state electrician or registered apprentice.  

  • Contemporaneous review of licenses will be performed on job sites during electrical inspections.
  • Contemporaneous review of licenses will be performed on job sites randomly if Summit County inspectors are on the job site.
  • Electrical contractors are not required to be present for all inspections except if requested by an electrical inspector.
  • Review of license will be required upon an investigation of receiving complaint(s) of non-compliance.
  • Verify Electrical contractors compliance to licensee-to-apprentice ratio, as required by law. The inspecting entity must also determine actions to take should violations occur.

Plumbing Contractor

Plumbing contractors are required to be licensed though the state (Masters and Contractors Licenses) as well as registered with Summit County. There is no Summit County registration fee associated with the plumbing trade.

Summit County inspectors shall, based on that inspector's familiarity with the installer, require each individual doing plumbing work as defined by 12-58-102 definitions C.R.S. to produce documentation showing they are a currently licensed Colorado state plumbing or registered apprentice.

  • Contemporaneous review of licenses will be performed on job sites during plumbing inspections.
  • Contemporaneous review of licenses will be performed on job sites randomly if Summit County inspectors are on the job site.
  • Plumbing contractors are not required to be present for all inspections except if requested by an plumbing inspector.

Alternative Energy contractors are required to provide proof of being a NABCEP Certified PV Installer. They are also required to be registered with the Summit County Building Department.
